about

NO ONLY is a musical about how perception and affection change environments—from the subatomic particles comprising living cells to astronomic objects pulling and pushing one another through space. One character, Dust—an explorer and romantic—mourns the collapse of the earth. Wind encounters her and interrogates her mourning. Yet resistance to his cold questioning brings a radical environmental shift, forcing both Wind and Dust to reinterpret what it means to be and not be in an unpredictable, cruel universe. Without the tools for a neat and comprehensive interpretation, without the autonomy to control how time evolves—they are left only to each other's ideas and hopes. What use are ideas and hopes, when the end is inevitably coming?

Director Nic Adams began developing the show with composer/writer Lane Dombois in late 2018. After a reading in a Brooklyn living room in 2019 featuring the performances of Fernando Gonzalez and Sophie Zmorrod, the four of them began developing the show together. In the summer of 2021, Lane's apartment was converted into a two-vocal-booth recording studio, and most of the show was tracked. Nic and Lane began engaging animator Leonie Bell and illustrator Brian Hendricks in mid-2022 to explore design elements. That winter, lighting designer Christina Tang and costume designers Inga Lee Black and Sandra Bell became involved. The show underwent further development in the first half of 2023, leading to a cast album release/design workshop showing on Governor's Island in and around an off-grid shipping container.

This is the music, these are the scenes audiences listened to while walking through a dilapidating military base; witnessing how it's been turned into an art park; entering a 20' x 8' x 8' designed space (on loan from caribBEING, a local cultural organization) to witness spinning animations, interactive puppetry, and reactive lighting; and exiting into the NYC night to regard the city and contemplate the world's end. Dust and Wind are ever on a path holding in tension conciliation and war, the realization of both a function of their own presence. But they are only non-life. Living life might know better.
